[Plot] The World Ends With You

[Yuli Jete]

Below her world sank. Farther into the abyss, lights flickered and died as the time capsule that brought her her vanished into the unknown. Goggles kept her eyes free from water, but they were not water proof. The details of her vessel flickered across the green screen as the precise location was recorded. She couldn't hold her breath forever though. The panic growing in her chest was only growing as she watched the ship sink further away. She looked up, one hand with a dufflebag, she had to make due with reaching the surface best she could.

A loud gasp left the white haired one as she broke the surface. She breathed in foreign air, the red and black of her hair hidden under white tresses plastered to her dome. Large white ears perked up from her head, rotating around. Her goggles had just enough power to point her in the direction of her destination before powering off. With a sound of agitation, she made her way, pausing after a moment to attach the bag to her back pack in order to swim better.

Eventually, she made it to the wed, muddy land. So different from sand. The air was humid, so different from what she was used to. She had no idea she landed in the Dengie National Nature Reserve. She just knew there was no one around, her ship was gone, and she had a general direction to walk in. That, and she was tired. So tired.

Taking off her goggles, she crouched until her backpack knocked her off balance. She fell into the sand face down. It was very soggy, the ground was. She shook off the back pack and put her goggles away. Everything inside was dry, but she the other bag was not so lucky. After taking stock of what she had, lamenting having no weapon, she zipped everything back up and prepared to go. Looking to the device on her wrist, she confirmed her direction and was on the move.

This time, she opted to carry the bag in one hand. If anything it could be used as a make shift weapon. She wondered if she made it to the right timeline. She pushed the question aside because there was no going back. No matter when she was, she had a mission to accomplish. Especially is she wasn't the only one to survive the crash.

Briefly her mind went back to the encounter on the ship. They'd been betrayed. So many others, dead in the hull of the Osirion. Captain Amun, Talia the mission commander, Samir the medic.... her grip tightened as she fought frustration. If she didn't have to press on, she would crumble and cry. As the ships navigator through time, it was her job to figure where to be and who to find. Had that traitor ruined the chance she had? Time would time.

The world as she knew it would end with the originator of the Animus Strain. It would belong to anyone. If she didn't fix it, if she didn't change the future, the world really would end with her. If she fixed it, and she stopped existing because her timeline is gone, so be it. It would be better for her colleagues to never been born in the first place rather than be murdered on their ship by someone they trusted.

There was much time for her to think and walk. There was no soul in sight, still. She made point to try and avoid other people if she could help it. Her tail dried out eventually, along with her ears and hair. She didn't know how people would react to a person part wilding. She had to be careful and cunning, wise but wishful.

Eventually, she looked to the sky and just stopped. Familiar but a bit dimmer. There was some haze in the sky, but that seemed strange. She just wanted to look up as she held the straps to her backpack. Hathor knew how long it would take her to reach civilization. For now, she could at least stand still and breathe.

You are lost again...

She snapped to at the thought, wiping her face against the cold. How long had she been walking? it was nothing compared to what she'd been through before. How long did she have to go? Nothing, compared to how far she would to complete her ask.

Movement caught her attention and had her darting behind the nearest cover. Remnants of a house? No. Part of a wall of stone, looked like. Stable enough to press against. What was that strange thing she saw? 'A moving vehi?' She peeked around, creeping to the edge and looked to the moving car. It came to a stop abruptly and she went back to hiding, fearing they were coming towards her. Seemed they moved to the side of the road to unzip and urinate discretely.

"Know who you are~..." she sang to herself lightly, following the prompt that jostled her from her trance state. Who was she to these people? Who would she become? She watched on, trying to listen in now that the rain had passed. Two shakes and a tug upward and the man was returning.

"Seriously, you couldn't hold it?" A female voice came from the car, a touch of a laugh on her voice.

"Know what you want~..." Yuli continued singing lightly, the melody coaxing her into mission mode and keeping her calm. What she wanted was obvious: to destroy the source of who ruined her world. That was not something she could tell these ancient people. How could she know when the knew so little of what was even in this area?

The male laughed back, still approaching the open door. "No way, Jo. No clue how you hold it. i won't watch, I swear!"

"Girls have it harder than boys. 'sides, we're near Maldon. I can make it 'til then.... Maybe."

"....yeah there's no way," he said with a laugh, the door shutting behind him as they readied the car to drive away again.

"Know what you got~..." Some information. A piece of it. Was Maldon where her compass pointed? She needed to charge her goggles. Sun wouldn't be up for a while. Maybe there was some other way to power it on. "What I got," she said again to focus herself. A direction. A destination. Knowledge of modes of travel.... She just needed to get one.

Yet she was hiding behind a wall... that wasn't here. That couldn't be her. She shouldered her pack again and headed to the road, walking in the road as the vehicle had been previously. She just needed to catch one. Surely they all weren't going to go fast like the other one. Plus, it was dark out. She didn't consider how her attire would stand out.

Underneath it all, she wore a bitted, sand colored body suit woven with reflective fibers. Meant for the heat, it did little with the chill in the air. At least it felt mostly dry with all her moving. She had a sleeveless, long coat that was lightweight and ivory. Well, was at one point. The water and mud stained is something darker, even the rain couldn't wash it out. She had her belt with various compartments. her goggled still on her head though not used. Her boots were fine, if wet as the water she came from. Surely a diligent driver would pay notice to her. Would they move or stop was the bigger question.

Laura was tapping her foot along with the hard-rock song blasting on the car stereo, trying to burn off her annoyance at having gotten talked into 'outreach and recruitment. What a stupid-ass idea that had, predictably, worked exactly not at all. Who coulda seen that coming, a hesitant mutant not getting talked into joining the horrible indoctrination school for freaks thanks to his parents' bigotry. But hey, she tried and she didn't threaten anybody with bodily harm once, so mission accomplished, I gue-- The sudden appearance of somebody walking in the middle of the fucking road jerks her out of her thoughts, foot slamming sideways onto clutch and brake as she yanks the steering wheel, skidding and spinning the car once, tires screeching across the asphalt until she comes to a stop vaguely facing the direction of the girl she just passed.

"Motherfuck--" She punches the steering wheel and is rewarded with a deployed airbag slamming her head into the driver side window, shattering it. She feels something in her neck snap between the adamantine-vertebrae and her head lolls halfway out the window, blood dripping from a couple smaller and one large laceration.

Vehi's were fast, much faster than she thought. A turn of an ear, a turn of a head, and a step wide step of her foot may or may not have saved her from getting hit with the sleek contraption. How it moved didn't seem as responsive to commands as she imagined. It was now stopped, facing her with blinding lights she held a hand up to.

'See where you are~...' The song in he mind of her own voice returned to her head. Keeping calm and keeping beat, she took in the situation. The vehi then deployed something within it, obscuring the figure that was in it. Instead, she pulled down her goggles to look past the lights. There seemed to be no movement....

'Seek what you want~...' A way to nearest den. Likely Maldon. She moved forward, crossing the stream of light to get to the drivers side. She smelled blood which made her pause. It alarmed her. There was something about it that was familiar. She eyed the blood and went still.

'Stray as you wish~...' The song spurred her on, reaching out a gloved hand to the blood and attempting to rub it on her node. The watch looking contraption came to life, absorbing the blood into its inner workings as she waited to see if this blood was the blood she was after.

'Stay who you are~...' Her eyes went to the other, waiting to hear the results. She supposed, she could remain civil.

"Ya alright?" she waited a moment before looking back to her node. The hologram display flickered, but it was still running the data. "Don't go dark yet. Still mahight need ya," she commented, waiting for the blood to read if it had the Animus Strain.

The woman whose neck is at a rather unfortunate angle groans as Yuli's readout determines no signs of the Animus strain. Then the woman moves to sit up from being slumped against the door and with a sudden jerk of her shoulders her head snaps back straight. The now clearly visible gash across her forehead is rapidly closing and her dilated pupils narrow and focus on Yuli.

"Yeah, never better." she says, sounding more annoyed than anything. "The hell you doing wandering in the middle of the road, kiddo?" she says, pulling the door-handle, then giving the door a kick that dislodges it before climbing out of the car.

There was a red X with a circle forming around it, but her attention was more on the healing powers of the one before her. "Yah mutahnt... no wilding. So I'm-..." she trailed off as the making of hope started to fill her again. She lifted the goggles to the top of her head and took a step forward, looking to the other with hope filled, sparking eyes.

"Yah wolverine, then? Healing fast," as if remembering herself, she took a step back. Wolverines had tempers and claws. With a push of a button her node went off."Help Yuli get to Maldon. Closest den, yes? Then help more. We help lots, together, save world," she said, not realizing how much adrenaline she was running on, nor how close to running out she was.

"You must help, please.

[Laura Kinney]

Laura runs her hand over her forehead and swipes the hair out of her face, unsure what to make of the young woman but clearly something is up with her. And she'd love to write her off as crazy but unfortunately this is exactly the kind of shit that happens all the time. She can smell the sea on the girl and notes her soggy shoes, but there's something else underneath, the kind of lingering smell of calamity. Fear, combat and determination. It hits a little too close to home, even after all these years and her eyes instinctively search the darkness as two claws slowly emerge from her right hand, the left still lingering on the car door.

"Somebody after you?" she asks, eyes darting to the girl between scanning the area. She doesn't question her assessment too deeply, she's got good instincts and whatever else she might be on about, the girl, Yuli, is clearly asking for help and refuge. That makes her smarter than Laura was so many years ago. "If so get behind me. Now." She doesn't get the sense there's anything but that's far from a guarantee that there isn't. Or won't be soon.

The claws!!! Yuli felt her heart jump. This was indeed a Wolverine! The readiness for action startled her, but sadness tempered her response. "No. All I came with are gone. They gone dark. Even who attacked us," she said somberly. "Yuli all that's left. Now, just need help to save world. Save mutahnts. Save future," she said looking to see if it made sense to the other. Was she still sniffing around for danger? If so, Yuli would move behind the shorter woman as instructed.

"Everything different here. Just need to find source, then all will be well," she said, unwilling to go on in case the other truly needed to concentrate.

Laura continues to glance warily into the darkness every once in a while but Yuli claiming no one is after her sets her at ease as much as she can be, given the circumstances.

"Alright, let's get you literally off the street first, yeah?" she says, gesturing at the car and climbing in. Then as a belated thought reaches over to open the passenger side door and waits for Yuli to follow her invitation.

"Go ahead and take your shoes off, kiddo." she says as she pulls the car around and to the side of the road before pulling her own shoes off and handing them to Yuli. They might end up being a little too big but Laura doesn't exactly tower above anybody. "Put these on for now and then tell me what happened. Or... what's going to happen?" she takes an educated guess as she pulls the car back onto the road and heads back towards Maldon.

It was good Laura opened the door for Yuli, because she had no idea how to do so. She looked at the door, really noticing that it swung out instead of lifting up. Odd, but so were many things. She dared not make her biggest lead wait. Thus, into the vehi she went, looking to the door until she finally reached over and shut herself in.

The shorter woman then gave the suggestion to take off her shoes. Also the insinuation that she was young. Yuli technically was in to this world. She opted to take her boots off, letting her feet air out and enjoy their freedom before accepting the other shoes. They seemed smaller, considering the white haired one was at least six inches taller. Still, she put them on best as possible, letting her heels hang out.

At the prompt, the technocrat thought about it a moment. How could she explain all that she could? No, but she know who could. "Two blips," She said before fidgeting with her watch like device. Eventually, a small hologram of pretty mans face appeared above her device.

"I am Zahir Omek, Cultural Liaison of the Osirion. We have passed through time to stop the source to our worlds problems. Around three hundred and fifty cycles ago, a virus called the Animus Strain was released by..." The device sputtered and audio ceased to function. The hologram was still talking mutely as Yuli cursed and tinkered with it. Eventually it came back on.

"...Wilding. With most mutants off planet, a group called Darwinists sought primal life without technology or order. Our opposing faction, the Technocrats, sought rules and technology, as you can imagine. Life is..." this time it was the holograph sputtered, then voice and image were gone. Try as she might, it couldn't turn back on. Yuli muttered something about charging before sitting back and letting out a soft sigh meant to calm herself.

"...Someone made that virus. I'm here to kill the source. Without it, Dr. Muto could never make the Animus Strain. Once reloaded, Yuli can search. There is no one else who can from my time..." she said, reminiscing on the words of he kind, and very dead, crewmate.

[Laura Kinney]

"Alright so the good news is, Dr. Muto is already in custody. But if I understand this time travel stuff correctly you wouldn't be here if that solved everything." she says. "Is killing Muto an option? If he's the one who makes this... virus?" she asks, trying to piece together a mental image from the fragmented information she's being provided. The hologram had spoken in clear enough English while Yuli's speech is clearly off in some manner. Just a quirk or is the unreliable recording her fumbling with the technology?

"We do try not to kill people, especially for crimes they've yet to commit. But..." She lets the word hang along with the implication. Out of everyone at the school, she's by far the one with the least scruples about solving something with the finality of her claws but she needs a bit more than the word of an odd young woman. "This virus, what does it do?"

[Yuli Jete]

The relief that Dr. Muto was captured nearly brought tears to Yuli's eyes. This meant she was in the right timeline. At least, one good enough to work. She wiped her eyes as tears eventually did fall. "It turns mutants into monsters. Primal beings. Animalistic with a heightened sense of cruelty," she said, her accent and speed much different than Zahir's. His voice was calm and deliberate, accent present, but not over powering.

Her ears drooped and tail lazily moved into her lap. "That... may naht be fair for Yuli tah saye. At first they weren't so cruel. Then the Darwinists came up in powah. 'Survival uh the fittest.' 'Only the strong survive.' They wanted e'erythin we weren't, an' the destruction uv all we are." she said, looking back to the watch device. She tried to get it to go, but only Zahir's face flickered in its greenish light.

"Zah' says it best. He was tasked with communications. Linguist. Knowing languages and lingo was his thing. He fixed the message so people uv this time knew what was going on. This was-... Talkin' 'bowt this was his job. There were many uv us..." She slowed, her mind going to what the heck was she supposed to do? She was to do without all those around her to accomplish their task?

Mention of killing came up and she shook her head. "Don't know if turnin' him off for the best. Need tah talk tah 'im. Learn more, o' check fo' the source. E'en if Dr. Muto dark, someone else could pick up where 'e left off," She said, knowing enough not to say the quiet part out loud.

Someone was the source of the virus and they needed to be eliminated.

She looked to her gloved hands, stretching her fingers and balling her hand into a fist now and again. "Most Yuli need now be rest. Food, if ya got any. Place to restore mah things... just til morning. Plenty uv lyght tah do it," she explained, trying to make light of the situation.

[Laura Kinney]

"Well, you managed to stumble in front of the right car. There's plenty of room at the school and we can sort some of this out in the morning."

"Just be prepared that if you do go into any details people are probably going to try and find alternative solutions." she says, reading between the liens well enough. "Sometimes those exist. Sometimes not so much..."

[Yuli Jete]

"Yuli will remebah that," she said, knowing she had a lot to learn and study about from her mission to try and make it be a success. She was one eighth of those meant to come along.

The longer she sat, the more comfortable she felt. It dawned on her just how tired she was as adrenaline slowly seeped from her. Then she finally realized what the other said. "School?"

[Laura Kinney]

"Mutant school. University, really but we take in folks who need a place to stay or get back on their feet too. And protect those who can't protect themselves from the likes of Muto. Or regular folks who don't like mutants. Shit's complicated. The important part is that it's a safe place full of people who wanna do that right thing."

[Yuli Jete]

Yuli perked up. "Like a den," she said, tail flopping happily a moment in her lap. "To the stream! Yuli most honored to go. This vehi still good?" She asked, looking around inside the vehicle they were in.

[Laura Kinney]

"Sure." Laura chuckles. "Like a den." She couldn't help but notice that what little of the recording she'd seen made it seem like Yuli's people where a lot less 'animalistic' than the woman in her passenger seat. And she'd walked back some of the 'cruel monsters' party line almost immediately. The ears and tail could just be a regular mutation but either way she could see how a society beset by an animalistic threat might look at somebody exhibiting even superficial similarities. Laura is way too familiar with preconceived notions to not notice.

"The car's fine enough." she says as drives them down the road back towards Maldon and asks the question that, in retrospect, she wishes someone would have asked her. "Are you okay? You lost people coming here, didn't you?"

[Yuli Jete]

The thrill of being in a moving vehi, a car, was great. She'd never been in a working one before. It felt faster than it seemed from outside. In most days, she would be ecstatic. This was a dream in a dream. She was supposed to experience this with people though. Her people.

The question was met with a single tear. Her face was towards the window, so it likely went unnoticed as a second one chased it. "Captain-Kin Naref Amun-Tari. Commander Talia Zhir-Aset. Doctah Samir Kael N'Dour. Chief Rahi Nefru-Sekh. Engineer Amala Djoset. Liaison Zahir Omek..." she said, wiping her eyes several times. "Yuli is not now, but will be one day.

One day, once she brought an end to the source that cause all of this.

[Laura Kinney]

Laura runs a hand over her face. She doesn't have to see to know Yuli is crying or close to. She reaches out for the woman's shoulder but then hesitates and pulls it back. She understands only too well, even if her circumstances had been a little different, how that kind of loss falls on you in the wake of violence and adrenaline. She just still doesn't really know how to comfort somebody. She'd grit her teeth and 'done what it takes' too.

"You will be." she just says. At the very least she's off to a much better start if Laura has anything to say about it. "And there'll be people to help you." she adds carefully. She's not you. She might actually accept help when offered.

[Yuli Jete]

"Taqa bless," she said, uttering her thanks as she wiped her face more. She was hesitant to speak more of her mission without learning more of this world. "University... What is is like? There and 'ere in this time?" She wondered, eyes glancing to the living legend of an X-man before looking out through the glass of the windshield. Her pack was by her legs. She had everything from her time with her. She hoped it was enough to save her world.

"If our mission is finished, Yuli may never exist. Would like to know what this world thinks of the future now," she said, hopefully making some sense.

[Laura Kinney]

"Not the right person to talk about that kinda stuff, but I don't think you can erase yourself. Don't ask me how that works though." she says before thinking on Yuli's other questions.

"University's just fancy talk for school for adults. Lotta people figuring out who they are, what they wanna do with their lifes, learning the kinda stuff they need for whatever they choose. I think plenty of people are anxious about the future right now. Shit's pretty fucked all over, people hating on those who are different, mutant or otherwise; climate's changing thanks to greedy fucks in charge everywhere. I am honestly not even that shocked somebody would look at some 'primal' virus for salvation. Folks get scared and desperate enough they start getting stupid and think blowing society up is gonna help."

"But, well, there's also always people like you who try to make things right. And the school's a place for those who got hope and a vision, those are the ones who build and inspire a better future. That's not me but I'll be damned if I'm not gonna fight to protect them from the world beating the naive hope out of them. Even if that sometimes means knocking some grit and pragmatism into them." she says with a kind of nostalgic chuckle.

[Yuli Jete]

Yuli listened, deciding to put her whole focus into the here and now for a change. Here and now, there was an actual Wolverine beside her. An X-man. Tiny and furious, but righteous, or perhaps just determined. "What name do yah have, she-who-giv-shoe? Or are you just called Wolverine?" She asked very slowly, deliberately as she wondered aloud. She know so many names of her crew, but not the one who helped her.

"You are too busy for skool because yah helping the world. Yuli would be too busy as well. Lean whats yah can, but talking to Dr. Muto is match," she stated, her own determination flowing through her.

[Laura Kinney]

Laura barks out a brief laugh. "Hah! Been a while since someone called me Wolverine. Laura Kinney, pleased to meet ya. X-23 if it's called for. And no one should use my life's trajectory as a guide."

"I'll see about getting you in front of Muto but that might take a day or two. He's not exactly in the most accessible location."

"In the meantime, there is one thing you can do for me." she says, having noted Yuli's intentionally subdued excitement about the car. Hitting a button on the armrest she rolls down the window on Yuli's side. "Stick your head into the wind and try to just enjoy yourself for a little while."

[Yuli Jete]

Laura Kinney, X-23. Nether rang a bell, and she didn't deny being a Wolverine. Of course she was on, so there was no disputing it. At hearing she might get a meeting with Dr. Muto, Yuli gave a big smile. The sound of excitement left her as her ears perked up. This was a complete change from the crying girl not long ago.

That all changed drastically the moment the window started opening up. Was Wolverine telling her to jump?! She leaned away from it, grasping her tail as it tried to fly out of it. The girl nearly felt her heart drop. "Is this some kind of test??" She questioned loudly over the sound of the wind.

Reply or not, she gradually relaxed. "Are yah sure Yuli's head won't come off?" She asked, sniffing the air. Everything seemed so different here. Less clean, but more vibrant. She tentatively stuck her hand out, then her arm.

[Laura Kinney]

"No test, no danger." Laura chuckles. "Just thought you might enjoy feeling the wind in your hair. It's fun."

[Yuli Jete]

She turned to look at her hand, seeing it in the wind. Then she thought of a line from an old song she heard. Let your hair fly through the wind~.

With the external and internal encouragement, Yuli did it. She braved up and stuck her head out the window. Pure joy over took her. Everything was going so fast! Her hair and ears flopped backwards as she started to laugh. This is it. This was her future. The future past where they would save everyone. She could do this.

"WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!! THIS IS SO META!!"

[Laura Kinney]

"There you go!" Laura grins and casually knocks out the remains of the window on her side to let her hand move in the headwind.

After maybe 15 minutes of driving, the last half of which a little slower through the quaint little harbor town of Maldon, the vehi pulls through a gate and crunches onto a gravel driveway. The headlights briefly illuminate the old manor and the two loosely adjacent buildings that look like modern attempts in red brick to maybe not match perfectly but fit the general look.

"I think for tonight it's best we get you into one of the guest rooms and then sort some things out tomorrow. Like letting some folks know about you. Minamida's almost certainly gonna want to talk to you just on account of time travel. She's nice enough but do not let her get sidetracked by how you got here or if you know how your tech works."

[Yuli Jete]

Yuli spent most of the trip with her head out the window. She glee and the sounds continued for a while, until they got around people. She would quiet down a great deal when they went slower. She took time to examine the tires and the world around them.

When they got around people, she pulled her head back in, hair looking an absolute mess. Still, she watched the scene change around her. Eyes wide as she took everything in. "Minamida? Understood. It's okay. Yuli doesn't know how Yuli's tech works," she mentioned honestly.

As they got even closer or moved to traverse, she couldn't help but wonder. "This den must be ancient! Do you really live above ground like this? Isn't it dangerous in the open?"

[Laura Kinney]

"Hah! You get it." Laura says as she pulls the car to a stop in front of a small row of garages. "It is dangerous. In a way. And you haven't even seen the worst of it. But Minamida's... She's one of the kind of people I talked about. She's got a vision and it's up to folks like me to make sure it doesn't bite them in the ass. She's on this kick of showing people there's no need to fight and part of that's being above ground. All the weapons and defenses are underground. You got good instincts."

"But it's probably also safer here than where you're from. We're not actively under attack."

[Yuli Jete]

Yuli would be ready to follow Laura's lead. For now, she stayed in the car, looking at all the other vehis parked. "This will take gettin' used to. As expected. Ya gotta share how to drive these vehi. They fast," she says with much approval. "Can get everyone out if there's one big enough, I bet."

[Laura Kinney]

"We've got other options for a worst case scenario." she says to reassure Yuli, but she understands only too well. You don't ever forget needing to know a way out. To not feel cornered by the past. To only be able to fall asleep knowing there's a go-bag under the bed and a buried cache past the stables

"Want me to get you a map? The town's to the north, east is a cliff over the ocean. Safe to jump at high tide, survivable at low. West's mostly pastures, and farmland. South is the woods, dense enough to hide in or loose somebody." she says, indicating the rough directions. "It's safe here, but I get it."

[Yuli Jete]

Her eyes took in the directions gestured to. it was good to have a rough idea of the land. "Please. Wha'evah to keep new hara safe," she replied about the map. "For now, a den ta recha'ge is nice. Ye help's much.... appre-cia-ted," she said warmly. "There're other X-Men around too?" She asked a bit more slowly rather than going at a rapid pace.

[Laura Kinney]

"Couple. Most of them in training still but when are you ever done with that." she says, leading Yuli over to one of the non-manor buildings to get her situated in one of the guest rooms.

[Yuli Jete]

"Nevah," she agreed, following the other with less soggy shoes in one hand. The shoes she had did not fit, but she walked with her heels out as it seemed the other didn't need them back. Her eyes went to the sky. A sea of stars stared back at her, though not as evident as usual. Light pollution maybe. She heard of it before in the olden days. The guest house was huge.
